film review – the huntsman: winter’s war

They’re back  – and this time Charlize Theron has an angry sister and her name is Emily Blunt AKA The Ice Queen.

The Huntsman – Winter’s War  is a follow up to 2012’s Snow White & The Huntsman which starred Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart & Charlize Theron. Hemsworth and Theron are back (I can’t imagine why Stewart wasn’t asked back) alongside Blunt & Chastain in a prequel / sequel mish mash of cinematography.

The film starts off with the story of The Ice Queen & her sister (Theron) – funny how this wasn’t mentioned in the first film though – and how the two Queens went their separate ways, and how the Huntsman ended up with Snow White.  Mid way through, we fast forward 7 years to after the events of Snow White, where no-gooders are after the magic mirror and Hemsworth is trying to lead a peaceful existence. The final quarter sees Theron returning as The Evil Queen by her sister’s side and The Huntsman reunited with his dead wife (spoilers – she’s not actually dead!). You can guess how it all ends…

Synopsis: “As a war between rival queen sisters Ravenna and Freya escalates, Eric and fellow warrior Sara, members of the Huntsmen army raised to protect Freya, try to conceal their forbidden love as they combat Ravenna’s wicked intentions.”

Verdict 2.5/5: The follow up, is the follow up you would expect – The Huntsman – Winter’s War brings in some good moments but overall lacks a meaningful punch (much like the predecessor). Key performances from Charlize Theron & Emily BluntChris Hemsworth’s performance was average at best. If they turn this into a trilogy I’m sure it’ll be met with a lukewarm reception….
